MANCHESTER LEAGUE 1950-1960

The 1950-1951 season has been ‘chosen’ as the starting-point in the coverage of Manchester League history for a simple reason – no Final Tables from before this have been traced ... yet.  The size of the competition varied in the 1950s and so did the nature of it.  In the first 5 seasons of the decade most of the leading sides were either ‘A’ teams of Football League clubs or reserve teams of clubs in the Cheshire County League or Lancashire Combination.  Many of these withdrew in 1955, when the Manchester League became a competition made up mainly of first-teams of clubs from the area again.  By the end of the ‘50s, reserve teams of clubs playing at a ‘higher level’ had increased in number again and a second tier had been added.  A fairly full record of the League’s top flight in these years is set out below, but the Final Table for the new, second level for the 1959-1960 season, won by Dukinfield Town, has yet to be traced.  If anyone can help unearth this, it would be really useful!

What is the '@' sign called?
Officially, this symbol is called 'commercial at'. Unofficially, most people seem to refer to it as the 'at sign' or just 'at'. Recently, there has also been a movement to call it the atmark. There are also numerous nicknames for it, including snail, curl, strudel, whorl, and whirlpool.
