LANCASHIRE COMBINATION 1894-1904

The Lancashire Combination continued to be dominated by Football league reserve teams in these years, but the size of the competition grew.  A number of the non-league clubs entering the league early in this period did not survive for long, but the competition outlasted its rival, the Lancashire League, which folded in 1903, with some of its members transferring to the Lancashire Combination.

Unfortunately, there are a number of errors in the figures given in some of the Final Tables because records were not always kept accurately.  Rather than delay ‘publication’ while things are being checked out, it has been decided to put ‘the latest information’ onto the site.

Heywood United and Trawden Forest left the Lancashire Combination at the end of the season.  The competition increased dramatically in size, thanks mainly to the demise of the Lancashire League, 10 of that league’s 12 members moving to join the Lancashire Combination.  A further 10 clubs were also admitted, with two equal divisions of 18 being settled on.  Colne and Darwen joined the 16 remaining Lancashire Combination clubs in the new Division 1, with all other new entrants forming Division 2.

*Rochdale Town folded after 14 games (6 points) and their fixtures and record were taken on by

  Atherton Church House.

At the end of the season the top six sides in Division 2 were promoted, though Stockport County’s first team replaced its reserve side.  The bottom six clubs in Division 1 were relegated, which could explain why Black Lane Temperance and Heywood now disappeared from the competition.  Clitheroe Central and Chorley St. George’s also departed.  Blackpool Reserves, Lytham, Oldham Athletic and Workington were admitted to Division 2, meaning both sections continued with 18 clubs each.
